The Day the Earth Stood Still

The Day the Earth Stood Still is a 2008 American science fiction film, a remake of the 1951 film of the same name. The screenplay is based on the 1940 classic science fiction short story, “Farewell to the Master”, by Harry Bates, and the 1951 screenplay adaptation by Edmund H. North.

Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, this version replaces the Cold War theme of nuclear warfare with the contemporary issue of humankind’s environmental damage to the planet. It follows Klaatu, an alien sent to try to change human behavior or eradicate them from Earth.

The film was found to be “heavy on special effects, but without a coherent story at its base”. In its opening week, the film took top spot at the U.S. box office and has since grossed over $230 million worldwide.

Happy Birthday again, J.LO

This is probably my favorite video of hers. Probably due to the presence of Eduardo Verástegui:)

Footballer unleashes his inner cheerleader

During the presentation of Polish club Lech Poznan’s squad ahead of the new season, Colombian defender Manuel Arboleda couldn’t help but feel the excitement of the young cheerleaders doing their routine right in front of the players. So he danced.

It appears he tried to follow their routine as best he could, throwing in a few moves of his own just for spice.
Arboleda’s dance show was for a good cause. Not only did the event serve to introduce the team, but it was also a charity benefit for victims of a recent flood in South Poland.

Medication Mistakes to Avoid

Taking an OTC Remedy Without Reading the Label

Plenty of people end up with serious health problems from accidentally taking too much of an over-the-counter drug (such as a painkiller), overusing drugs such as laxatives or acid blockers, or taking something that interferes with another medication they’re on. No matter how innocuous a drug may seem, it’s always smart to read the label.

Taking Sedatives if You Have Heartburn

People who took prescription drugs called benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax, Halcion) to fall asleep are 50 percent more likely to have heartburn at night than those who don’t.

Taking a Daily Aspirin without Asking Your Doctor

Some people shouldn’t take aspirin every day, especially since it can cause stomach bleeding. Doctors usually recommend it only for people who have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Women may not benefit as much from aspirin therapy as men. And some people appear to be resistant to aspirin’s anticlotting effects.

Using Old Antibiotics for a New Infection

First, you should have finished the entire prescription the first time around. Second, many antibiotics are specific to the type of infection you have. Taking the wrong antibiotic might not work and can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, making treatment for that type of infection more difficult the next time.

Taking Calcium on an Empty Stomach

The calcium in most supplements is bound to a form of salt called carbonate. Your stomach needs plenty of hydrochloric acid to break down calcium carbonate, so always take your supplement with a meal or snack. Food will cause your stomach to produce the acid.

“Healthy” Foods That Are Fat Traps

Some foods that seem diet-friendly—like turkey burgers, yogurt, and more—are shockingly high in calories and fat.

1. Flavored Yogurt

Plain yogurt naturally contains about 16 grams of sugar per cup. But if you eat flavored yogurt, you could be downing 15 or more additional grams of sugar, which is like shoveling in four extra teaspoonfuls.

What to eat instead: Choose plain, low-fat yogurt and stir in a teaspoon of honey, maple syrup, or all-fruit spread for a hint of sweetness. Or opt for fat-free Greek yogurt, which is lower in sugar than even regular plain yogurt but often has double the protein to keep you satisfied longer.

2. Sugar-Free Cookies and Candy

Don’t fall for the no-sugar scam: When manufacturers remove the sweet stuff, they often add fat. One popular brand offers chocolate-chip cookies that each contain 160 calories and 9 grams of fat, so why not eat the real thing? You might save calories with sugar-free candy, but many contain sorbitol, which can cause bloating and diarrhea.

What to eat instead: Get your cookie fix with graham crackers, which have almost a teaspoon less sugar per serving than many other packaged cookies.

3. Ground Turkey

It seems like a no-brainer for burgers and lasagna, but ground turkey often includes fat and skin. A 3-ounce serving can contain 13 grams of fat — almost triple the amount in lean ground beef. With 40-plus percent of your day’s worth of cholesterol, regular ground chicken is no better.

What to eat instead: Look closely at labels. Extra-lean turkey is your best bet, with 1 gram of fat and no saturated fat per serving.
